Ponyo is a very light-hearted and family-friendly beautifully animated film by Hayao Miyazaki. The story follows a goldfish daughter of a wizard scientist who lives in the ocean. On her journey to the surface, she meets a young boy called Souske playing near the shore and follows him to learn about the human world, and to become human as well.
The first thing I would like to mention is that Ponyo looks nothing like a goldfish. If you watch the trailer you'll understand. The second thing I'd like to mention is that her real name is Brunhilde, which I had never known despite knowing that I've watched this film at least four times.
This was the first Studio Ghibli film I was able to watch in the cinema, and I had absolutely no idea what it was about either. I don't actively watch family movies but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Of all the films from Miyazaki that I have watched, I find this one is the most aesthetically pleasing. I appreciated the extra detail put into the movements of the sea creatures, and the colours used to echo the mood of each scene presented.
I would not say that this is my favourite animated film, but it is one I always enjoy when I do watch it from time to time.
My personal rating: 7/10
