The Expanse

  • Film: The Expanse
  • Year: 2015 - present day
  • Director: James S. A. Corey
  • Country: USA
  • Seasons: 2
  • Genre: Sci-Fi, Drama
The Expanse is set on a series of Sci-fi novels written by a duo, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, known collectively as James S. A. Corey. The story takes place in a future where humanity has colonised the solar system, and deals with the tension between those on Earth, Mars and inhabitants of Asteroid Belts. The series follows multiple groups of characters, switching between all stories as they slowly intertwine unveiling political conspiracy and an unknown threat to humanity. The show really starts to build during its second season as characters begin to come into their own through growth and story lines begin to line up, driving forward the mystery. The Expanse is one of those rare shows that actually gets its science right has been described as a story about people responding to fear – fear of the other, fear of the new, fear of inequality, fear of death”. I would recommend this to any fans of sci-fi, in particular, Battlestar Galactica and Firefly.

The Martian

  • Film: The Martian
  • Year: 2015
  • Director: Ridley Scott
  • Country: USA
  • Runtime: 141 minutes
  • Genre: Comedy, Sci-fi

The journey of trying to survive on Mars on a diet of potatoes with no ketchup. The Martian was a great success when it was released but I personally never understood why. I really did not like the movie.

The story follows Matt Damon playing as Mark Whatney who is stranded on Mars from being separated from his team due to a violent storm. As we are shown the comedic struggles of his life on Mars trying to grow food and survive, it is juxtaposed with the NASA holding a funeral for him, and his crew facing a moral dilemma in regards to attempting to save him, and going directly against orders from NASA and endangering everyone's lives in the attempt.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the movie. It had a solid plot which was based on a vast amount of research and collaboration from NASA in attempt to depict the most accurate account of events that could possibly happen. I personally enjoyed Interstellar a lot more, although it has its own flaws, the main difference to me was that it was much more emotionally engaging, whereas the attempts at humour in The Martian was really lacklustre to me.

Ridley Scott may have disappointed me in 2015, but I sure hope that Blade Runner 2049 will make me reconsider his works.

My personal rating: 3/10

The Vampire Diaries

Tv Show: The Vampire Diaries
Creators: Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson
Year: 2009
Country: America
Seasons: 8
Episodes: 236

The Vampire Diaries, created in 2009, is one of my all time favourite tv series which encapsulates audiences through its riveting plot line, exploring various relationships and character building throughout. The series incorporates universal themes and everyday experiences such as the journey through high school, relationships and dramas which teen viewers can relate to, and intertwines this with mystical qualities. The two initial vampires, brothers Stefan and Damon weave their way into Mystic Falls, changing the lives of all characters around them. Magic, witches and werewolves are also included, adding an even greater layer to the show.

By the end of the fourth episode the storyline really picks up as varying plot lines begin to develop and the journey begins. Elena Gilbert and her best friends Bonnie and Caroline share an unbreakable friendship and showcase to viewers the meaning of true friendship in which viewers can relate to. As the show progress, Elena forms an undeniable connection with Stefan, but little does she know he is a vampire. Brother Damon, appears to cause havoc in Mystic Falls and attempts to claim Elena for himself. This love triangle stems to form the captivating plot line in which numerous other storylines are built upon.

Overall, this show pulls on audiences’ emotions and has been so successful with its eight seasons and 171 episodes. It even has a spin off show, ‘The Originals’ based on a key family in the series, which highlights its success as a TV series. I would highly recommend this series to anyone interested in supernatural drama.

My rating: 10/10
