Divergent was written in 2011 by Veronica Roth, and is a dystopian, thrilling novel which is one of three books in the series. The main protagonist, Tris, lives in a world characterised by a divided society in which she struggles to find where she truly belongs. She is forced to make a choice between the many factions including Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (the selfless) and Candor (the honest). Tris holds a daunting secret which stems to form the suspense behind the storyline. The experiences both Tris and other faction members live out after their choice has been made shapes the story and creates an intriguing plot line.
Divergent is an excellent novel as it showcases Tris’ strength and determination as a character which draws the audience in, additionally illustrating her relationships with other characters as the story continues. Overall, it is an excellent read and I would recommend reading the trilogy of books, the other two being Insurgent and Allegiant.
I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction combined with action.
